Working Around The Abyss
We sometimes fall into an abyss- an immeasurably dark and bottomless hole, which at times can appear as a place of no return.
Death, disappointments, or discouragement could take us there. We might descend into it gradually because of a series of events. Sometimes, a single action could cause that downward spiral.
Elijah found himself in such an abyss that he desired death. After having a momentous mountaintop experience, he went deep into the desert of discouragement- literally, figuratively, emotionally and spiritually.
When God Asks The Question
Elijah was hiding in a cave when the Lord found him and asked, “What are you doing here?”
When God asks a question, he’s not looking to us for an answer; he is looking for action.
God’s question to Elijah could also be posed “How did you get to this place?”
A place of fear, where feelings of failure and frustration reside.
Incredibly, Elijah was praying for death, not realizing that God’s plan for him was to bypass death altogether and be taken up to heaven. But before that could occur, Elisha was waiting in the wings for him to mentor and he would carry on Elijah’s legacy in a more extraordinary way.
Oh the treasures we forfeit when driven by fear instead of faith.
Elijah had his moment under the juniper tree. While there, he was given rest and nourishment to continue what God had commissioned him to do. Instead, he used his new strength to go hideout in a cave.
Elijah’s defeated condition didn’t disqualify him from service. God’s question to Elijah was a wake-up call to spring him into action.
Elijah might have given up on himself, but God hadn’t given up on him.
Until it’s good, God is not done. He is the grand weaver that works our deepest pain into His glorious purpose.
And, let me say this, God hasn’t given up on you either!
Your Call To Action
If you are in an abyss, this is your call to action. Your call to work around it.
Filling the abyss can seem daunting. But working around until it closes is doable.
Work around it a little at a time, one step at a time, one day at a time.
Work around it by determining the steps that plunged you into an abyss and the measures needed to narrow the gap.
Work around it by nurturing the mind, body, and spirit.
Work around it by being thankful and appreciative for all the blessings in your life.
Work around it by connecting and surrounding yourself with your people.
As you work around the abyss,
The void will be filled, darkness will give way to light, igniting the determination to live.
Out of your pain will emerge immense possibilities and undiscovered gifts that inspire others. Giving you a more profound knowledge that the One who has called you is Faithful.
This Is Your Call To Action!
With,
The Water I Give

Thank you, Collette. You speak light into the darkness, and reminds me that sometimes we need to “Get Up” before God can lead us out.
Thank you for your call to action. Your post inspired me to goggle “Get up” biblical verses & these 3 particularly resonated having been refreshed by your words & insight.
Joshua 7:10
So the Lord said to Joshua, “Rise up! Why is it that you have fallen on your face?
Isaiah 52:2
Shake yourself from the dust, rise up,
O captive Jerusalem;
Loose yourself from the chains around your neck,
O captive daughter of Zion.
Micah 2:10
“Arise and go,
For this is no place of rest”
Sending a prayer of strength and encouragement to anyone reading this currently in the Abyss. This is no place of rest & healing is on its way.
Thanks Barb,
And you shine the light on my words for others to be encouraged. Healing is indeed on its way. Thanks for sharing the “Get Up” verses. So enlightening.
